Students from the Academy of Architecture Amsterdam got the assignment to develop one of the key elements in the Staalmanpark - result from the Face Your World project in Amsterdam Slotervaart - a climbing wall or playground object. Forcing them to detach themsleves from a routine of 'conceptual design' they where limited in their design process by the use of only models and storyboards. Besides they had to choose one material - steel, wood, bricks or concrete - in which they had to develop their proposals. This led to a purely material based development in which the particular properties of the chosen material where leading. It proved to be a fascinating experience, where materialisation of a design project escaped the status of 'filling-in-the-space-between-the-lines'. Materials, production techniques and tactility became the center of their architecture.
