The Blitz Beton Workshops were initiated by the ENCI (First Dutch Cement Industry). From 2000 onwards bureaubakker coordinated and produced the anual events in collaboration with the ENCI. Each year around 30 European students where invited to a weeklong hands-on experience with concrete. Based on the adagium 'one has to smell, feel and taste concrete to understand its potential' they worked on a general architectural theme, designing and making concrete objects ranging from 27 m3 sculptures to new cladding of a facade. Supported by a score of architects, critics, engineers and concrete experts the Blitz Beton Workshops evolved into a well-known and appreciated extra-curricular learning experience.
